ENDANE TEA PLANTATION

Endane estate which produces quality Sri-Lankan tea is situated in the cosy hills of Sabragamuva province is one of the largest tea plantations owned by Dilmah Group which markets best quality Ceylon tea.

Endane is situated 36 k.m from Ratnapura town, which is world famous for its precious stones such as the blue suphire, ruby and many more.

The British Planters introduced the tea plant in 1915 to this virgin soil, over looking Singaraja forest, which is one of the biggest rain forest in Asia to commence this plantation of 625 hectares as to date.

In 1925 the first tea-processing centre was established on Endane with heavy machinery being towed by elephant carts as roads were not motorable on this hilly terrain.

As tea crops increased by the day on Endane the second processing centre was established in 1955 by Mr. Sam A Watte a legendary planter of yester year who is still remembered on Endane.

The workers to plant and harvest this great crop were first settled in from India to take care of this plantation.

A hospital was constructed together with a maternity ward in 1918 to take care of the estate community.

As this plantation is on a remote hill and away from others the then planter developed their own recreational facilities such as a swimming pool and tennis court close to his bungalow with a pond for trout fishing and not to forget the horse staples in which they rared their horses for transport.

The Manager’s Bungalow or Superintendent’s bungalow as known is situated on a beautiful hillock over looking the estate and surrounded with bird life on the lovely trees around it.

Dilmah group which owns this prestiges property is proud to produce the best quality liquoring teas of the world.

They have also not only looked into the planting of new tea cultivars but also the well -being of the estate working community by improving their housing sanitation facilities and transport and not to forget the education of the estate child.

Endane produces approximately 600,000 kg of quality Ceylon teas in it’s modern processing centre annually and proud to be their.
